This photo of a quirky lifting bridge carrying the LBSCR Deptford Wharf branch over the Grand Surrey Canal came to us via the Jeoffry Spence Collection. Its history has been traced back to a paper presented to the Institution of Civil Engineers in the 1849-50 session but, clearly, whilst many elements are the same, the bridge was significantly altered over the years until it was demolished in 1963. Further information of its life and times would be much appreciated.
