The building on the right is the 'Stop House', built in 1796 by the Oxford Canal Company to collect tolls from traffic coming from the newly constructed Grand Junction Canal. The pair of narrowboats are where the narrow stop lock was located for gauging boats but this was removed in the 1940s when the Grand Union was modified to take wide boats to Birmingham.Braunston. Grid Ref: SP 7196 5498 [GU-097-740]. Bridge No.48 with Gayton Junction on the far side to the right. Note that there is provision for a towpath on both sides but both are blocked. When the Northampton Arm was made, the towpath for the main line was diverted at Bridge 47 to the left hand bank, as seen in the picture .
