Grid Ref: SK 3938 5171. After decades of repair and shoring up with timber, which reduced the navigable height, because of mining subsidence the tunnel was finally closed on July the 6th 1900.

This is the portal constructed in 1897 under Midland Railway ownership when they built their Ripley to Heanor branch over the end of the tunnel and extended it by about 10 metres. They also relined a further 76m under the new embankment for the railway which gives rise to some confusion in articles that suggest that the total lengthening was 89m . The end of the tunnel is now a further 18m west at the end of a culvert added under the widened embankment for the A38, which was built on the line of the railway.

This appears to be a bridge over a road but maps and ground level pictures suggest that the
