AEC Regent V / Northern Counties Double-decker bus, Reg.No. KNY 495D. Built 1964
New to Rhondda Transport as No. 495, the bus passed to National Welsh and on withdrawal was immediately purchased by its current owner. The photo is in front of the Pierhead Building, a Grade I listed building in Cardiff Bay. It was built in 1897 as the headquarters for the Bute Dock Company. Opened by British Rail as part of the then-axed Picc-Vic tunnel project in March 1980, as the northern terminus of the Bury-to-Manchester heavy railway line. Trackbed of the cable-worked tramway that connected the Caldon Canal at Froghall with the limestone quarries at Caldon Low. It was the fourth iteration of such a tramway and operated from 1849 until 1920. The view is looking East from the A52 road overbridge at Whiston Common/Shirley Common. The house in the right background is called Archbury. The stream adopted the trackbed post-closure but has been there as long as I can remember, which is around 50 years (information courtesy of Mark Higginson)Caldon Low Tramway. No 5 is an 0-6-2T locomotive built by Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn in 1909, works number 3377 for Lambton Collieries. It s pent all its working life hauling coal.
