Built by Clarkson of Chelmsford with coachwork by Munnions. A water-tube boiler, fired by vapourised paraffin/air mixture produced superheated steam at 300psi. Oxford Canal /River Thames, Boatman’s Chapel on a boat , Oxford c1850’s
Built or established by Henry Ward a prosperous narrow boat owner of Oxford and licensed by Bishop of Oxford on 29/12/1839. The Oxford Canal Company made an annual grant towards its upkeep but when Ward asked for its renewal in 1902 the OCC refused. Shortly afterwards (date unknown) the boat foundered and was not replaced. Note old Hythe Bridge over Weir Stream (Branch of Thames)showing that picture was taken before 1860-the new bridge was built about this time. Two vehicles of this type were used for the service between Stranraer and Drummore. They were steam driven, paraffin fired vehicles supplied by Darracq & Serpollet of Paris.
