The mine is a short distance up the hill from the Bixslade Tramroad. Its present name remembers the Union Pit Disaster on 4th September 1902 when four miners were killed as a result of the colliery being flooded by a sudden influx of water from abandoned workingsForest of Dean. The “shack” in the centre is the oldest building in the docks; an iron frame transit shed built in 1867 for the Midland Railway. Its ironwork is in good condition, but awaits restoration. At this location, the canal has been put into a culvert to pass under the railway. It connected ironworks at Upper Forge and Lower Forge, and also ran to an inlet from the River Severn called Lydney Pill. Scarborough South Cliff Tramway. 04 March 2024
The Scarborough South Cliff Tramway Company Limited was formed in 1873 to construct the first funicular railway in the United Kingdom. Engineered principally by William Lucas, constructed by Crossley Brothers of Manchester at a cost of £8,000, and with cars built by Metropolitan Carriage of Birmingham, it opened on 6 July 1875.Each car carried 14 seated passengers, and was attached to a twin-steel cable rope, which was originally operated by a brakeman at the top station, while the bottom of each car was also fixed to a water tank. The track is 4' 8 1⁄2" gauge and 284 feet (87 m) long, on a 1 in 1.75 (57%) gradient.

The Bicslade (sic) Tramroad was a ¾ mile branch off the Severn and Wye Railway’s 3 ft 6 in. gauge tramroad from Lydney to Lydbrook, which opened in 1810. It was built to serve collieries and stone quarries along Bixslade and had opened by June 1812.
