Defiance Platform 1947 (MLN2 @ 252m 11ch)
This station was opened by GWR on the new main line route in 1908 and closed in 1930. It was built by the Royal Navy to GWR plans for officers and men serving on the nearby RN establishment HMS Defiance. Deptford claims to be London's oldest, still operational, station originally being opened in 1836. This image shows the station entrance following a rebuild in 1842 and comes from a water colour formerly owned by the London and Greenwich Railway. The Dundee and Newtyle Railway Station on frieze of building is a reference to the company that opened this station in 1832. It is reputed to be the first ever passenger railway station in Scotland. Its history is uncertain but it is likely to have been built for Bristol Docks in 1834 and misattributed to Brunel. The boat moved to Exeter in 1970.
