This building has had many uses over the years: sawmill, dairy and council depot. (1 July 1973)

Coton Mill was built in 1833, in anticipation of the opening of the canal. A steam-powered mill, it is said to have been the first mill in the country to have made self-raising flour. Production ceased in 1914, when it was converted into a warehouse. (1 July 1973)

Hurleston Junction: cottage below locks (1957)

The cottage which used to be at Hurleston Junction opposite the entrance to the Welsh Branch was erected shortly after the merger of the Chester and Ellesmere Canals in 1813. The design, with its wide eaves, clearly shows Telford’s influence. It was demolished not long after this photo was taken. Sir John Smith, the wealthy banker and Conservative MP who had earlier encouraged the National Trust to take on the restoration of the Stratford Canal, had campaigned vigorously for its preservation. He later wrote, ‘It was, in particular, the destruction of Thomas Telford’s Junction House at Hurleston ... which maddened us into starting the Landmark Trust’, a charity which saves historic buildings that are at risk and gives them a new and secure future. The craft by the house is probably an early hire boat, possibly from ‘Holidays Afloat’ at Market Drayton. (24 April 1957)
