[Unless “Map B” shows otherwise, this is probably north of Greenspark but before the point where the M90 cut through the waggonway in 1964. Looking over the garden wall of a cottage in Masterton Road near its junction with North Road, the line of trees and bushes marks the course of the Halbeath Railway alongside the Pinkerton Burn, curving gently towards the latter road. The tower of Inverkeithing Church is visible on the extreme left of the photo but the lineside trees have grown to hide the hill to the right, still largely open ground at this end.Halbeath Railway, Greenspark, Inverkeithing. The Halbeath Railway embankment on the right ends at the bridges over the Mowbray Burn; the parapet of the road bridge can be seen at the bottom of the dip. Beyond, the road rises to Halbeath level crossing and its controlling signal box. Developments since the 1990s have altered Kingseat Road and inserted roundabouts by the photographer’s feet and in the dip.Halbeath Railway, Halbeath. The short road ahead, now called Waggon Road, originally ran to Inverkeithing Gas Works, which was served from the Halbeath Railway alignment in NBR days. The site is now a children’s playground. The houses in the distance are in Spittalfield Crecscent and their rear gardens run down to the end of Waggon Road. Viewed from the Port Street footbridge over the Rosyth Dockyard Branch, the long-wheelbase flat wagons are close to the old Halbeath Railway alignment. The line continued across a bridge over the Keithing Burn and curved on to the Mid Pier projecting into the harbour left of the open railway wagons. Other industries are, from the right, Caldwell’s Paper Mills, T.W.Ward’s shipbreaking yard, Cruick’s Quarry cutting into the Ferry Hills, and, this side of the harbour again, an engineering works on the site of a former shipbuilding yard.Halbeath Railway, Inverkeithing. The road running left to right is Main Street (the former A907), Halbeath. The road past the “30” sign is Kingseat Road, which can be seen dropping down in the distance into the Mowbray Burn valley. The Halbeath Railway ran along the right-hand side, crossing Main Street on the level, and the buildings behind the “30” sign are probably built on its formation. Just beyond the houses on the left (Morningside) the Townhill Tramway joined the Halbeath Railway. The plinth support for a bridge that carried the Halbeath Railway over the Mowbray Burn and an access road to Clarkston cottages, looking south from Kingseat Road about 80 metres south of Halbeath Level Crossing. The waggonway was on an embankment here, but the embankment north of the bridge has long been removed. Bridges carrying Boreland Road over NBR Edinburgh - Dundee main line, Keithing Burn, and Halbeath Railway at Inverkeithing South Junction. The main-line railway bridge No 34 was replaced by a concrete version in the late 1970s. The large building beyond the bridges was a maltings and has since been replaced by blocks of flats. The tunnel was opened in 1817 to bring coal and limestone from mines on the northern side of the ridge behind Blaenavon to the ironworks. Based on an existing coal mine tunnel, it was 1870 metres in length and was the longest horse drawn tramroad tunnel in the world. The tramway also continued down the north side of the ridge to the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal at Llanfoist enabling finished good from the ironworks to be conveyed to the coast at Newport.Hill’s Tramroad.
