Carmarthenshire Railway (or Tramroad). Furnace, Llanelli. Site of the original route of the railway, with a level crossing near the crossroads, prior to a deviation being built to the south with a bridge under the railway. Map Ref 5032 0128. October 1963 (10)
Furnace Post Office is on the left, with the Furnace Arms pub across the road. The railway came along the track emerging on to the road to the left of the telegraph pole. There are the remains of Raby’s Iron furnace (Grade II* listed) near the village. It was built circa 1800 and, in the Napoleonic Wars, manufactured canon & shot.
