Maudslay Table Engine driving machinery at Norbury maintenance depot
Henry Maudslay invented the table engine in 1807. This comparatively small steam engine sat on an iron table, and was independent of the structure in which it was standing. The boiler was located outside the workspace to reduce smoke and fire risk. Grid Ref: SP 7275 5305 [GU-100-120] Orange was carrying casks of vinegar. Alongside is butty Buckingham with steamer in background. The trucks contain limestone and are on a tramway that crossed the tunnel near to its northern portal. The 'bridge' is a tramway from ironstone quarries and the mechanism enabled trucks to be tipped directly into boats at the wharf.“Orange” sunk in cutting at the north end of Blisworth Tunnel
