Stover Canal — Ventiford Basin (2017)
Opened in 1792 and just under 2 miles long, the Stover Canal was built to convey china clay. In 1820 a tramroad was made from granite quarries at Hay Tor to Ventiford Basin. (24 April 2017)

Looking east. The platforms, immediately beyond the level crossing on the Up side, have been demolished but the building remains. The goods yard was on the near side of the crossing, and the signalbox is on the Down side. Opened 08 July 1845; closed 22 September 1930

George Hudson, “The Railway King”, was instrumental in bringing the railway to Whitby. He had the road now called the “Khyber Pass” (named from a pass in the Afghan campaigns) built into the cliff by his Whitby Cliff Building Co. to provide access to his West Cliff estates. It provides access to and from the West Cliff to the harbour and piers.
