Day boat being bow-hauled below Rushall Lock 3, Rushall Canal, 1966

This was a horse-drawn boat. It was being bow-hauled because the horse couldn't pass under Five Ways Bridge (in the distance) due to work being carried out on the bridge.

The Bacat system included barges which could be loaded on to a mother ship for transfer to European waters The system failed because of action taken against it by Hull Dockers in 1973. The tug and barges were tried for other loads but failed to build a new market.
