Cardiff Railway. Steam Rail Motor at Whitchurch Station (CRY @ 2m 25ch). 1911
Steam rail motor car of the Cardiff Railway which inaugurated a passenger train service between Cardiff and Rhydyfelin in 1911. The photograph was taken at Whitchurch Station and includes Mr. Davies (station master), Mr. Hart, Mr Ree (Engineer), Mr Stuart, Mr Allen (Constructor of line), Mr. Holloway (supt.), Mr Harris (Solicitor), Mr Wilcox (inspector), Mr Dennis (General Manager), Lord Bute and Lord Merthyr. The bogie van with the swastika emblem on the bodyside is not German (Deutsche Reichsbahn) but French (SNCF). Some continental rolling stock, out of gauge for British railways not being ferry stock, was noted as being at Dover during the war. Whether the SNCF bogie van received the swastika before shipment to Dover or whilst at Dover would be interesting to learn!Captured European vans, French and possibly Hungarian, being used as temporary machine stores. Eastleigh Works, Southern Railway. Interior of carriage building workshop, 1946/47
All-steel carriages for 4-SUB (or later 4-EPB) units under construction. The bodies of all these were built at Eastleigh Works, as special jigs were used for assembly. Probably, the first carriage on the left and the second on the right both have 9 compartments (they were intended for use as 1st/3rd composites, which never happened).
