When the longer steel rails were laid down, they were fastened in similar manner but were also joined together by four-hole fishplates eighteen inches long placed on the outside of the rail flanges, the bolts having countersunk heads to prevent fouling by the waggon wheelsPeak Forest Tramway. The stone blocks were roughly two feet square and the rails were each three feet long as originally laid, thus necessitating the placing of the blocks at three feet centres, or roughly with one foot space between each block. Each rail weighed from 40 to 50 pounds. When the nine feet rails were substituted, each rail of course spanned three blocks, there being only a rail joint every third block instead of on every block as with the old cast iron railsPeak Forest Tramway. The method of switching from one line to another was extremely crude. The two converging rail ends were brought together and the actual switch was formed by a wedge shaped wrought iron tongue piece which was tied in place by a peg on its underside which dropped into a hole drilled to receive it in the base railPeak Forest Tramway.
