Replacing the first bridge (a chain link suspension bridge very similar to the one in Budapest), the new bridge opened in July 1923 initially as a toll bridge. It lasted less time than its predecessor as, by the 1970’s it was unable to cope with traffic volumes and the restricted width prevented upgrade. In 1987, the superstructure was replaced on the existing piers.
The photo was probably taken around the time of World War 2, as barbed-wire defences are in place on the shoreline.
