The railway bridge was opened in 1856 for the SECR on their line between Kent and the port of Sheerness. It opened to allow large vessels to navigate past and not obstruct maritime traffic on the Swale. The opening span was replace by a new Scherzer rolling-lift span in 1904, and the whole bridge was replaced in 1960
