Work started on the British end of the tunnel in 1880 and work continued sporadically for the next 15 years. Parties of supporters and potential investors were regularly invited to visit the tunnel. This image shows one such party at the tunnel entrance with some trying the bucket used to lower visitors and workers down the shaft.
