The station was built by the South Eastern Railway and was opened in 1866. The large hotel building fronting the station was designed by Edward M Barry and was initially known as the City Terminus Hotel. This picture shows the station before the front steps and balustrade were replaced by shops and the entrance to the Metropolitan District Railway sub-surface station.
