A colliery railway had first been opened in 1876 but was replaced in 1906 by the 2ft 3 in gauge Campbeltown and Macrihanish Light Railway. The line was built to connect the coal mine at Macrihanish with the docks at Cambeltown in Kintyre. The line was closed and lifted in 1934.
