C1 Class 4-4-2 No. 251 (Ref: 010759)
Designed by H A Ivatt and built at Doncaster Works in 1902. Locomotives of the '251' class remained in express service for nearly forty years. Eventually all the engines of the class were given superheaters, but No.251 has had her chimney set back to preserve her original appearance. To provide the needed large grate area Mr Ivatt used, for the first time,in Britain, the wide based or Wootton fire-box extending the full width of the frames. Preserved in the National Collection.
