The Great Northern and Great Eastern Joint Line was formed in 1879 and took over certain existing lines and built new ones to make up a route of 123 miles from Huntingdon to Doncaster via Spalding and Lincoln. It gave the GNR access to routes in Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire and allowed the Great Eastern access to the South Yorkshire coal fields.
