Although the North London Railway was only 13 1/2 miles long around the North of London between Chalk Farm and Poplar, it was a strategically important route providing a link between the Western and Northern main lines and London's Docks. Its passenger services were based on Broad Street station and operated over 55 miles of other companies lines.
