GWR Selection of Broad Gauge rolling stock in storage at Swindon. 1892
When the GWR converted the last of its broad gauge tracks to narrow (standard) gauge in 1892 a strategy was required to remove the broad gauge rolling stock from the tracks. These temporary broad gauge sidings were laid out on land north of Swindon Works to accommodate the broad gauge rolling stock until it could be disposed of. There is also a photo and an article in Cassier's Magazine of July 1896, starting at page 204, although this does not mention Swindon. MacDermot refers to temporary sidings in some fields between the Locomotive Works and the Midland and South Western Junction Railway, that had been purchased and covered with 15 miles of temporary sidings for the reception of the stock.
