James Wittit Lyon (c1791-1861), a London banker with local connections, formed the Resolven Coal Company which opened a colliery in Cwm Clydach, a tributary of the River Neath, in 1839. It was connected to the Neath Canal at Resolven by a tramroad about 1,600 yards in length.
