Duffryn Llynvi & Porthcawl Railway was built between 1825 and 1829, to connect the iron works that had sprung up inland at Cefn Cribbwr, Aberkenfig and Maesteg with a new harbour at Porthcawl. The railway covered a total distance of 16¾ miles, descending some 490 feet from its starting point near Caerau, Maesteg. It was a single track, horse-drawn, edge railway with passing places, and was built to a 4' 7" gauge with the rails fixed to stone blocks so as to leave a clear path between which horses and handlers could walk.
The Bridgend Railway was 4-miles-long and ran south from the Duffryn Llynfi and Porthcawl Railway near Parc Slip Colliery, west of Tondu, to Bridgend town centre. It was opened in 1830 as a horse-drawn, edge railway of 4' 7" gauge, and became part of the Llynfi Valley Railway Co (ex- DLPR) in 1854 before the new broad-gauge Llynfi Valley Railway was built up the valley.
