The bridge under Buxton Road had already been bricked up at the time the photograph was taken, the object being to make the bridge strong enough to take the heavier modern road traffic. Ferodo is a brake parts specialist with a long history in Chapel-en-le-Frith. The company, founded in 1897, began experimenting with brake materials in a hut near Chapel-en-le-Frith before moving its production there in 1902.Peak Forest Tramway. Looking up to the top of the incline from the Buxton Road bridge at the foot. The track was double up the incline and there was a double scissors crossing at the bottom. The waggons were raised and lowered by means of a rope passing round a drum at the top and the scissors crossing would be necessary at the bottom as the waggons would be alternatively raised and lowered on each road.Peak Forest Tramway. The bricked-up bridge at the foot of the incline can be seen in the centre of the picture. The length of the incline was about 600 yards and the gradient has been given as 1 in 9. At the top of the incline was formerly a revolving drum of wood with an iron rim about 18 feet in diameter which was laid below the surface and between the tracks. Above it, raised on piles, was the controlling gear, and as the full waggons went down the incline, they drew up the empty ones. Eight full waggons on the down journey are said to have produced enough power to pull up one full truck or several empty ones.Peak Forest Tramway. Chapel-en-le-Frith. There are traces of a large number of sidings having existed here. These would doubtless be necessary as, probably, the loaded waggons from the quarries in the upper section of the tramroad would arrive faster than they could be dealt with on the incline.Peak Forest Tramway. All trace of the winding gear and the cage have entirely disappeared. At the actual summit of the incline were several buildings. Beyond the junction with the branch to the Holderness Quarry, the right hand branch carries on towards Peak Forest Quarries and converges on to the Dove Holes - Peak Forest Road.
