Caldon Low Tramway. From the Caldon Canal at Froghall to the limestone quarries at Caldon Low

Trackbed of the cable-worked tramway that connected the Caldon Canal at Froghall with the limestone quarries at Caldon Low. It was the fourth iteration of such a tramway and operated from 1849 until 1920. The view is looking East from the A52 road overbridge at Whiston Common/Shirley Common. The house in the right background is called Archbury. The stream adopted the trackbed post-closure but has been there as long as I can remember, which is around 50 years (information courtesy of Mark Higginson)
