Liverpool & Manchester Railway locomotive "Lion" at The Manchester Museum of Science & Industry 1999-2007.
"Lion" was built for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway by Todd Kitson and Laird of Leeds in 1837-8, and rebuilt in 1841. It was retired from traffic as a ballast engine in 1857 and then sold in 1859 to Mersey Docks & Harbour Board. In 1874 it was put to work as a pumping engine in the docks, and was rediscovered in 1923. Renovated at Crewe works, it appeared in the Liverpool & Manchester centenary celebrations. In 1953 it starred in the role of the "Titfield Thunderbolt". Owned by Liverpool Museums from 1970, it was kept at the Manchester Museum of Science and industry from 1999 to 2007 while its display area was built in the Liverpool Nuseums.
