The Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal (sometimes known as the Hereford & Gloucester Canal) ran for 34 miles from Hereford basin through Ledbury, Dymock and Newent to Over, on the West Channel of the River Severn west of Gloucester, with a short branch to the coal fields at Gorsley. It was opened in two phases in 1798 and 1845, and closed in 1881, when the southern section was used for the course of the Ledbury and Gloucester Railway.
The Coombe Hill Canal lies north of Leigh between Gloucester and Tewkesbury, and runs west for nearly 3 miles from Coombe Hill Basin to the River Severn near Wainlode Hill. It opened in 1796 and closed 80 years later in 1876, after the only lock was damaged by flooding.
