The canal linked the Hackney Clay Cellars to the River Teign. It was 0.6 miles long, and had a single lock where it joined the river. It was privately built by Lord Clifford in 1843, and throughout its life carried ball clay for use in the production of pottery. It closed in 1928

The water-filled ditch is marked as being the line of the canal. However, the only part of the canal with this orientation to the grandstand on the race course is just east of the lock, Grid Ref: SX 87353 72187, and the waterway there is wider than the ditch shown.
