Ayshford Chapel was built in the 15th century by the Ayshford family of adjacent Ayshford Court. It is Grade I listed and is now maintained by the Friends of Friendless Churches. Built around the same time as the canal for Captain John Twisden, the engineer who succeeded James Green in extending the canal to Taunton. The name ‘Rock’ relates to the fact that the bedrock is very close to the surface at this point, and it was a remarkable achievement for a cutting to be chiselled out by hand through this section. Extensive repairs to the aqueduct were undertaken in 1976 with the installation of a butyl rubber lining to stop leaks from the trough that was damaging the brickwork.
