Abingdon, St Helen's Wharf. c 1900
Picture taken from about Grid Ref: SU 4961 9653 [TR-065-870] looking upstream. St Helen's Wharf is where the narrowboat is moored in front of the single storey building. The entrance to the Wilts & Berks Canal was just the other side of the overhanging roof on the left of the picture. The bridge to the left of the narrowboat is over the river Ock and is about 70m from the canal entrance but confusingly, is inscribed 'Erected by the Wilts & Berks Canal Company. AD 1824. Cast at Acramans Bristol'. The construction of this bridge was a requirement of the W&B's Act.
