The canal ran for 9¼ miles from a junction with the Grand Surrey Canal at New Cross to a basin where West Croydon Station now stands. Finished in 1809, it became the first canal to be abandoned by Act of Parliament in 1836 after which the London and Croydon Railway was built over much of its line, hence little remains. he major remaining feature is the former reservoir at South Norwood.
