In this section, the 1834 shortening cut five and three quarter miles off the length of the canal leaving redundant loops at Hopsford, Nettle Hill, Stretton under Fosse, Brinklow, Fennis Fields, Cathiron and Newbold on Avon. Parts of some of these were retained as they led to still active wharfs. At Stretton, Fennis Field and Cathiron, sections are still used as or leading to a marina.

Brinklow arch. April 1973. April 1975.
This is what is now the remaining visible arch of a 12 arch aqueduct widened in 1834 on the off side of the canal. The others have been infilled. Brindley was forced to build it as the local landowner would not let him follow the contours, as he usually did, into the grounds of his house. This arch carries the Smite Brook under the canal. It is probable that the other arches on this side were buried when the embankment was built to accommodate a full width canal on top, hence the need for the extensive wing walls.
