Warehouse at Preston Basin. 1969
The remaining stone-built Georgian 1804 canal warehouse situated at the head of Preston Basin, looking west from Corporation Street. It was modified probably around the 1880s to accommodate the construction of Corporation Street, making it a five sided structure. It was originally served by the tramroad and wagons were turned on turntables. The tramroad would have entered the building via a stone archway on the south side of the building. Later railway tracks superseded the tramroad but they did not enter the building. The building was demolished around 1986 and 1987 for the construction of the A59 Ringway Penwortham Bypass extension. The adjoining art deco car showroom was built over the eastern end of Preston Basin and two stone warehouses which were removed in the late 1930s.Warehouse at Preston Basin. 1969

Scaffolding going up to take the span down. In December 1959, Preston Highways Committee declared its intention to widen Aqueduct Street, a narrow, single lane road which passed beneath the Lancaster Canal. In 1964, the ¾ mile section of the canal south of Aqueduct Street to Preston Basin was drained and the aqueduct demolished in the same year thus severing the canal. This left the alignment between Aqueduct Street, Preston Basin and Corporation Street isolated. It is today known as the Lancaster Canal ‘lost mile’.Preston: Aqueduct over Aqueduct Street
