Short boat Edith towed by second boat heading north from Worsley

Edith, then unpowered, was owned by Albert Blundell. 1957 or early 1958?. The funnel beyond the second boat suggests that the second one was unpowered and there were three boats in the train. The are passing the stop plank narrows with its crane 50m west of Worsley Road Bridge. Grid Ref: SD 7475 0036 [BWl-008-690]

Pile driving for motorway west of Worsley

Driving piles for what was originally the Stretford-Eccles by-pass, the first section of the M62, later the M60. The motorway archive website dates the photo between April 1957 when construction started and October 1960 when the motorway opened. As the piles are being driven at the start of the construction of a large motorway bridge, that suggests 1957 or early 1958.The piles needed to be long for two reasons. Firstly, the canal is built on several feet of peat as it crosses part of Chat Moss. Secondly there was still mining taking place under the canal and it was expected that the canal might subside a further 12ft after the motorway opened. Grid Ref: SD 7458 0031 [BWl-008-870]

View from Little Packet approaching Worsley from Leigh

St Marks's Church spire is clearly visible on the ridge but nowhere could be found on maps between 1850 and 1975 that would place this to the right of a length of straight canal with no bridge in front of the right hand bend in the distance. Also, no row of houses could be found, either on the left or right of the canal in this area.
