The Duke of Bridgewater’s mines were quite unique as there were subterranean canals nearby, so instead of using tubs and cages to lift the mined coal, it was transported along the underground canal syste on narrow boats. This thin, oak boat was referred to as a mine boat but nicknamed a ‘starvationer because of its exposed ribbed sides.
