Grid Ref: SJ 8333 9749 [BWm-001-030]. The Bridgewater Viaduct is an extension of Deansgate, crossing the River Medlock. On the left is the Christian Scientist Church. Beyond the river arch is an area shown as 'Old Basin' with wharves either side that appears to be the limit of navigation.

River Medlock in foreground. Beatties Coal Wharf on site of Packet Station on the right. This would appear to be from the Bridgewater Viaduct somewhere near Grocers Warehouse (Grid Ref: SJ 8329 9753 [BWm-001-090]), which connects Deansgate to the Chester Road. Some features match the view, specifically the tower of St Georges Church, the Merchant's Warehouse, beyond and to the right of the Beatties sign, the warehouse beyond that and the fact that contemporary maps show the area in the foreground to be a coal wharf but other features such as the roof line of the building in front of the church tower are harder to resolve.

Grid Ref: SJ 8279 9745. Opposite the Hulme Locks. The building has been demolished and replaced but the footbridge and basin behind it remain.

Barge leaving Hulme Bottom Lock, Manchester. 1970s

Grid Ref: SJ 8263 9743 [BWh-001-150]. A loaded "Tableymere" entering the basin between Locks 2 and 3, having locked up from the Irwell Navigation, an extension of the Manchester Ship Canal. This flight was replaced by Pomona Lock 1km to the west.

Hulme Bottom Lock

Grid Ref: SJ 8263 9744 [BWm-001-830]. Through the railway viaduct is a flour mill on the main line of the canal, since demolished. Pomona Lock replaced the three Hulme Locks, linking the Bridgewater Canal to the Irwell Navigation, an extension of the Manchester Ship Canal.

Grid Ref: SJ 8263 9743 [BWh-001-150]. This connection between the Ship Canal and the Bridgewater Canal was closed when Pomona Lock was opened in 1995. The picture was taken from the far side of the River Irwell and the River Medlock is between the back of the warehouse on the left and the railway viaduct.

From Warwick Road North Bridge (now Sir Matt Busby Way). Grid Ref: SJ 8086 9642 [BWm-004-040] The boats are moored in a layby and were offloaded onto a conveyor running parallel to the canal which fed the one across the canal into the power station on the right of the picture.
