The original canal was cut from the Duke of Bridgewater's mines in Worsley to Castlefield Basin in Manchester. It was later extended from Worsley to Leigh. Another branch, now often treated as the main line, was cut from Streford to a connection with the River Mersey at Runcorn with a short branch to connect to the Trent and Mersey canal at the northern portal of Preston Brook tunnel. For the purpose of having logical sections the canal has been broken down into the following sub albums.
