A short canal, nine and a half miles long, that was also part of the local drainage system. It gained its Act of Parliament in 1772 and opened in 1782, running from the River Humber but not actually reaching Market Weighton, finishing at a terminal basin about two miles south west of the town. The 3.5 miles (5.6 km) closest to Market Weighton was abandoned in 1900, but carrying from a brick works continued till 1950. The right of navigation through Weighton lock was lost in 1971.

There was a moveable bridge across the lock on the canal side but the water beyond should extend in a straight line away, not across the picture. 'Brickworks Bridge' from the south
Grid Ref: SE 8663 2786 [MW-003-460]. This is a 'new' bridge at the north end of the brickworks north of Broomfleet Landing. It was this brickworks that used the canal till 1950, 50 years after it had been abandoned by Act of Parliament. Wilson Barkworth Cottages can be seen above the centre of the bridge and in the distance above the right hand end is the NER Hull & Selby Line railway bridge.'Brickworks Bridge' from the south

Canal Head' August 1970
This is the head of the 1km long Holme (or Vavasour's) Canal that left the main line at Holme Ings Lock. The white building is the former Star Inn, now Stray Farmhouse, Grid Ref: SE 8460 3990 [MW-015-170] and the building in front, now replaced by a farm building, is presumably the warehouse on the wharf at the end of the branch.Canal Head' August 1970
