The canal ran from a junction with the Wakefield Branch of the Aire & Calder Navigation at Heath Lock, to a basin at Barnby near Barugh, WNW of Barnsley, where it connected to coal mines via the Silkstone Tramway. About half a mile east of Barnsley Basin, the canal made a junction with the Dearne & Dove Canal. It is now almost completely filled in or built over.

Barnsley (or Old Mill) Basin
Grid Ref: SE 3497 0705 [BAc-019-670]. The canal used to continue to the immediate left of the row of houses but the bridge under Old Mill Street on which they sit has been filled in.
