The Nottingham canal ran for 24km from the River Trent in Nottingham to the Cromford Canal at Langley Mill. At the same time, a cut was made from Lenton on the canal to just above Beeston Weir enabling boats to avoid a shallow and difficult section of the River Trent. The section of the Nottingham Canal from Lenton to Langley Mill has been abandoned. From about 800m north of the junction with the Beeston Cut The canal has been filled in and buried under housing for 5.7km. With the exception of about 800m near Langley Mill, much of the rest remains in water or at least traceable, though infilled in places.

Ahead is the arm to the GNR siding and Manvers street Wharf with the Poplar Cut going off to the left in the distance. The enclosed footbridge in the middle distance connected Boot factory on the left to the GNR London Road Station. Blacksmith's Lock and the 'Bottom of the Top Three' taken from Woodyard Lane Bridge, Grid Ref: SK 5319 4048 [NT-008-320] looking west.
