Previously known as Gloucester & Berkeley Canal as it was intended to run to Berkley Pill, running alongside the shallow sections of the tidal river Severn. Now called the Gloucester and Sharpness Ship Canal to reflect the eventual connection to the River Severn, 2.7km upstream of Berkley Pill.
